What happens when students look at old school uniforms not as waste, but as a resource? Together with Tampines Meridian Junior College (TMJC), The Circular Classroom brought circularity to life through a hands-on Values in Action (VIA) programme involving 30 JC1 students. Working alongside TMJC’s VIA Committee and The Circular Classroom, the students transformed pre-loved college uniforms into two large handcrafted College Banners, each measuring approximately 3.5m × 1.8m. Throughout the process, students explored circular design, material selection and textile upcycling, while spending many hours cutting, arranging, stitching and working together to turn an idea into something meaningful for their college community. The completed banners were proudly revealed during TMJC’s National Day Celebrations – giving the uniforms a new life as a symbol of college identity and spirit. The project extended well beyond the two banners. In total, 531 pre-loved uniforms, weighing 138 kg, were collected. While not all the material was needed for the banners, the collection demonstrates an important principle of circularity: before sourcing something new, look first at the resources we already have. By choosing existing textiles rather than new materials, the project helped keep uniforms in use for longer while showing students how circular thinking can be applied in a practical and creative way. A big thank you to the TMJC students, VIA teachers and school leadership for being open to new ideas, experimenting with new approaches and continuing to bring circularity into the school community.
