Changkat Primary School (CKPS) celebrated its 60th Anniversary on 5 July 2025 with a special community project that embodied sustainability and community engagement. Every year, numerous pre-loved school uniforms still become obsolete. Instead of discarding these materials, CKPS, in collaboration its Parents Support Group (PIE Club), The Circular Classroom, Temasek Polytechnic, Bernina and Changi Simei Community Centre embarked on a large-scale repurposing initiative and invited students, parents and local community to join. With over 3,000 volunteer hours over 6 months we transformed over 2,000 pre-loved CKPS uniforms into over 1,400 handcrafted memorabilia - including keychains, pen holders, cutlery set holders, and pouches. During the anniversary event these products were distributed to visitors, alumni, and students as gifts, sold and auctioned off with all proceeds going towards the PIE clubs educational programmes. The project aligned with Singapore’s Green Plan to become a zero-waste nation as it effectively reduced textile waste and promotes the values of sustainability among students, parents, and the local community. For this project we started with over 150kg worth of preloved CKPS school uniforms to repurpose and by the end of the upcycling project the remaining waste came to 20kg. Sustainability needs collective efforts and commitment! Through repurposing pre- loved materials, we were able to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and resourcefulness while strengthening community bonds. This project was partially co-funded under the SG Eco Grant.
