Something to bring home! For our last session at THK Active Ageing Centre Kaki Bukit, we invited our senior friends to create their very own pencil cases using pre-loved school uniforms. One thing we learnt from our regular workshops with seniors is that there is often very little need to teach them how to use a sewing machine. Many already know exactly what to do! Some learnt sewing from their mothers or aunts, while others picked up the skill during their school days, when sewing was still part of Home Economics lessons. It is wonderful to see how these skills, sometimes unused for many years, come back so naturally. With a little encouragement and a chance to practise, our seniors are soon confidently guiding fabric through the sewing machines, sharing tips and helping one another along the way. These sessions remind us that sustainability is not always about learning something new. Sometimes, it is about rediscovering the knowledge and practical skills that earlier generations grew up with — skills that are just as valuable today. And the best part? Everyone gets to bring home a handmade pencil case, created with their own hands and a little piece of Singapore's school uniform history. A nice reminder that skills can last a lifetime, and that we have so much to learn from our seniors.
