What happens when young students and seniors come together to create something meaningful? A wonderful exchange of skills, experiences and stories across generations! As part of our collaboration with Victoria School, The Circular Classroom organised two intergenerational workshops at THK Active Ageing Centres in Cassia and Kaki Bukit, with two sessions at each centre. Student leaders from Secondary 1 and Secondary 2 joined the seniors for hands-on activities that brought together sustainability, creativity and community bonding. Using pre-loved school uniforms, students and seniors worked side by side to transform discarded textiles into thoughtful handmade gifts. Together, they created close to 100 Teachers' Day gifts, giving old uniforms a new purpose while showing appreciation for the teachers who play such an important role in our children's lives. The sessions were about much more than sewing and crafting. Students and seniors shared skills, helped one another and exchanged stories about school life, growing up and how everyday habits have changed over the generations. It was lovely to see how a simple creative activity could bring people of different ages together. For our seniors, the workshops offered an opportunity to connect with the younger generation, share their experiences and contribute to a meaningful community project. For the students, it was a chance to learn beyond the classroom and discover the value of patience, empathy and working together. Four sessions, two Active Ageing Centres and nearly 100 handmade gifts – a wonderful reminder that sustainability is not only about giving materials a second life, but also about bringing generations and communities closer together.
