Singapore's rich Peranakan heritage is known for its vibrant colours, intricate floral motifs and beautiful decorative tiles. Often featuring flowers, leaves and geometric patterns, these tiles reflect a unique blend of cultural influences and remain a distinctive part of Singapore's architectural and artistic heritage. Inspired by these beautiful designs, we decided to bring a little Peranakan creativity into our workshop with the seniors at the Active Ageing Centre Kaki Bukit. Our idea was to create a colourful tapestry resembling a collection of traditional Peranakan tiles — but using pre-loved school uniforms! The uniforms provided the base for each individual tile, while fabric scraps in different colours and patterns were transformed into decorative flowers, leaves and other motifs. There was plenty of room for imagination, with each senior experimenting with different shapes, arrangements and combinations. As the individual pieces gradually came together, our tapestry began to resemble a beautiful puzzle of Peranakan-inspired tiles, each with its own character and story. Happy that students from ITE College Central joined us on this occasion as part of their Service Learning committment.
